LTL vs. partial vs. full truckload

Under 6 pallets, LTL usually wins. Six to eighteen, price partial truckload — it skips terminal handling and damage risk. Above that, or anything fragile or time-critical, go full truckload.

How freight rates are actually set

Lane balance, fuel, equipment scarcity, and season. A lane with heavy inbound and light outbound is cheap one way and expensive the other. Booking 2-3 days ahead is the single biggest lever you control.

Transit time math

Hours-of-service caps a solo driver near 500 miles per day. Team drivers roughly double it. Add a day for appointment-only receivers and for pickups after 3pm.

Accessorials to expect

Liftgate, residential delivery, inside delivery, driver assist, detention after two free hours, tarping on flatbed, and reconsignment. Disclose your dock situation and they never become surprises.

Packaging that survives the trip

Shrink-wrap to the pallet, keep freight inside the pallet footprint, use corner boards on stacked cartons, and mark class and count clearly on the BOL.

Filing a freight claim

Note exceptions on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves, photograph everything, keep the goods for inspection, and file within nine months.
